The Oil Sands Sustainable Development Secretariat was created by the Government of Alberta in the summer of 2007 to address rapid growth issues in the oil sands regions of Alberta. The Secretariat collaborates with ministries, industry, communities and stakeholders to address the social, infrastructure, environmental and economic impacts of oil sands development. It acts as a main point of contact for inquiries from the public, industry and stakeholders on the government’s plan for managing growth in the oil sands.

Key Activities

  • Creation of a short term action plan and long term strategic plan for the sustainable development of the oil sands that addresses social, infrastructure, environmental and economic impacts.
  • Review and consideration of the recommendations resulting from the Multistakeholder Committee Final Report the Aboriginal Consultation Final Report and Investing in our Future: Responding to the Rapid Growth of Oil Sands Development for the development of the strategic plan.  The strategic plan will form a new provincial approach to managing the oil sands regions and is anticipated to be completed in Fall 2008.
  • Preparation of a Community Development Plan intended to accelerate housing development in the Fort McMurray region.  Innovative models are being considered to achieve the timely delivery of reasonably priced housing to this region.
